I'll be back tomorrow with
two winners compliments of
Random.org. Good Luck!~
One of my favorite things to do is to go "antiquing", browsing antique shops for hours on end. Visiting antique shops is similar to going to an art museum for the day, each piece has a story to tell and if you look and listen closely, you can hear them speak to you of their past.
When I go to antique shops, I am immediately drawn to any rustic wooden objects I see; old cabinets, boxes, frames, decoys or bowls. It seems the more the wood has aged the more character it has, like a great grandfather with stories to tell.
When I find a wooden object, I cannot resist holding it in my hands, running my fingers over the smoothness of the cold sturdy aged wood. I wonder whose hands made this , whose hands used this and why did it end up here on a shelf? For a wooden bowl, frame or box to last over fifty years is certainly a testament to the quality of craftsmanship and the grade of wood. Holland Bowl Mill produces bowls that will last long enough to possibly end up in one of those antique shops. What's more, Holland Bowls offers a lifetime guarantee against warping and cracking. We don't see the words "lifetime guarantee" too often , do we? Sure, we can buy imported wooden bowls at discount stores but if you're interested in quality and longevity, you're interested in Holland Bowl Mill.
The company began in 1925 in Holland, Michigan and is still owned and operated by relatives of founder Chester Van Tongeren today. Bowls are made the same way today at Holland Bowl Mill using the same method as was done over a hundred and fifty years ago. American made using American hardwoods like beech, maple, cherry and walnut, Holland Bowls are sure to be passed on generation to generation. What a lovely gift to pass on to our children; mom's salad bowl that always graced the dining room table on holidays or the faithful fruitbowl always on the kitchen table.
When I was given the opportunity to test and review a bowl from the Holland Bowl Mill in Holland, MI, I was curious about just how my bowl was made. I think you'll find that interesting also and if you visit the Holland Bowl Mill site, you can watch a short video that explains the process. I had no idea what "turning" a bowl meant nor had I any idea that a bowl needed to dry for thirty days , sanded and treated. It truly is an art form and I'm grateful to have become a bit more knowledgeable about the process. Holland Bowl Mill has been featured several times on the Discovery Channels "How It's Made" series and continues to air periodically. I'm sure going to check for times and catch this show!
At Holland Bowls, you'll find the wooden bowls I spoke of in different woods and numerous sizes. You'll find bowl sets, salad bowls, chopping bowls, wooden utensils and more. I have put on my Christmas list one of the Salad Bowl Stands shown here. I don't care how large my dining room table is, there's never enough room for all the food; is there?
The chopping bowl you see above comes with the Mezzaluna Knife and what a simple yet coveted item it is. Making my job one hundred times easier and a thousand times more enjoyable, I was looking for things to chop! No messy counter, no gathering of all the diced onions to put into another bowl; it's all there right in the chopping bowl. At only $38.50, you can have this chopping bowl and knife for about $30 with a special discount.
Reasonably priced wooden bowls and more are available at Holland Bowl Mill through January 15th at an incredible 20% off. When you order from Holland Bowl Mill, simply enter the code bowl20 and make a notation in the comment box, "FRACTURED TOY".
Now is the time to order for your holiday gift giving. This year, give a gift that really will last! I've made up my list and Holland Bowls is right up there at the top of the list. This is sure to be a much loved and appreciated gift to virtually anyone (okay maybe not kids!) on your list.
What lasting gift will you choose? I'll choose that Salad Bowl Set, thank you!
If you would like a chance to experience what a real bowl is and should be, Holland Bowl Mills would like to show you that.
There will be two winners in this giveaway. First number drawn will receive a 12 inch chopping bowl with Mezzaluna knife. The second number drawn will receive a 9 inch chopping bowl with Mezzaluna knife. Both of these are absolutely gorgeous and I can pretty much guarantee that once you try these, you will be back for more.

I found it interesting that you aren't to use vegetable oil to protect wooden cutting boards, etc. I've actually done that to one of our cutting boards once. Whoopsie! Definitely won't again though!
I think I'd want to give the "Maple Salt & Herb Box w/Swivel Lid" to my brother in law, he's quite the culinary dad and I think he'd get a lot of use out of it. And I know my husband would like the "Chopping Bowl & Mezzaluna Knife Set". That bowl and knife alone would probably get him cooking more!

Twittered!
What a great company. I loved the virtual tour from log to bowl! I found it quite interesting that it can take up to 20-30 days for a bowl to dry. I also like the fact the company is still, after all these years, family owned.

I would love give the Spoon Rest Wooden Bowl - 17 inch - Dark Finish, salad bowl to my in-laws. They eat a lot of salads and they definitely could use this, especially where the salad utensils rest right in the bowl. Very nice.

i had no idea you could save (or revive) wooden items that had turned with such a simple solution of using non-abrasive scrub pad, lemon juice, and pumice dust!
i love all of this stuff, but i would get my dad the 9 inch chopping bowl and mezzaluna knife set!
That salad bowl stand is only $32! Nice!
I'd get a decorative wedge bowl for my mom... she has a lot of dinner parties.
I am amazed that "it can take close to one hundred years for a hardwood tree to produce the grains that make each Holland Bowl Mill wooden bowl so beautiful." One hundred years? Whoda thunk it! Definitely worth the wait, though - what gorgeous stuff!

I'd also give the Wooden Salad Bowl Set - 17 inch Bowl, eight 7 inch Bowls, Utensils - Oiled Finish to my in-laws. They have a lot of get togethers and it would be perfect!
It is hard to believe that the wood for these bowls comes from a tree that old. They are amazing bowls. Thanks for the giveaway!
I love the fact that they have a lifetime guarantee against any cracking or splitting. That's what useally happens to my cutting boards.
Plus never put them in the dishwasher. Thank you so much!

I would love to give the Wooden Salad Bowl Set to my daughter who's considering moving out of state not as a goodbye present but as a bribe to stay. Thank you!

The first interesting thing that I learned from the site is that they make these bowls right in Holland Michigan...I grew up in Holland Michigan!! I am going to look this factory up when I go back to home to Holland over Christmas!
Then second thing I learned is that it can take close to one hundred years for a hardwood tree to produce the grains that make each Holland Bowl Mill wooden bowl so beautiful. 100 years is a long time!!
Over time wood bowls and cutting boards will darken to a deeper rich color if properly maintained.
hetz-junk(at)hotmail(dot)com

bebemiqui82(at)yahoo(dot)com
I'd give the decorative wedge bowl to my sister!
bebemiqui82(at)yahoo(dot)com
One interesting fact is that the bowls have a variety of colors and the grain patterns give testimony to the uniqueness of each bowl, no two are exactly alike. That is pretty cool. brewerchickey78(at)yahoo.com
I learned you have to be very patient waiting for the bowl to dry- a matter of weeks. This makes them all different and unique!
linjenals at yahoo dot com
I'd give the large wooden popcorn bowl with burned imprinting to my mother-in-law. Great for movie night!
linjenals at yahoo dot com
The most interesting fact to me is the LIFETIME GUARANTEE!! That is a great asset!
jls_wss2003 at yahoo dot com
I'd also get the 10" popcorn bowl for my boyfriend, who is as addicted to snacking as I am.
jessica.tupper{at}gmail.com
These are really neat! To preserve them, they use B's Oil Salad Bowl & Wood Preserver 'to give the all wood items a deep penetrating natural finish and protects the wood from moisture and stains.'
khmorgan_00 [at] yahoo [dot] com
I was surprised that they have them dry for 20 days before sanding them.
Thanks,

These bowls really are beautiful. I did not know that it can take close to one hundred years for a hardwood tree to produce the grains to make these bowls
I found it interesting that it takes one hundred years for a hardwood tree to produce the grains that make each Holland Bowl Mill wooden bowl. Beautiful stuff.
I found it interesting that it takes so long for the bowl to dry and that you can't use just any oil in it. I also like the fact that they have minimal waste when making the bowls.

reg8w@aol.com
I'd love to get the wooden salad bowl set as a gift. It's beautiful and functional. My kids would beg for salad every day!

anthonlm01(at)aol(dot)com
I learned you should not use oil's in the bowl because it could turn the bowl "rancid" I never knew that.
Stormy5475@aol.com
I like that the wood is cut in the US, and wouldn't have realized how many people are involved in the whole process of making each bowl, rather than on an assembly line just by machines.
Thanks!
I would love to give one of these bowls as a gift to my sister, who really appreciates good craftsmanship.
I'm amazed that it can take 100 years for a tree to mature enough to make one of their bowls. That alone would make me want to appreciate and care for one of these special works of art. I agree with you, there's always extra room in your dining room for a salad bowl on a stand!
Truly, these bowls are gorgeous, and I'd be honored to have one in my kitchen.
I'd love the Spoon Rest Wooden bowl, and if I couldn't keep it, I'd give it to my best friend who is a really great cook and makes the most interesting salads.
I twittered this too, under Katydidandkid
bowls have been turned in america for 150 years!
I like the salad bowl set with notches for the serving forks
twittered it :)
valerie2350
I found it interesting that the bowls are dried on a rack for 20-30 days before being oiled; no assembly line pumped-out bowls here! That's handcrafting at its finest.
I'd get the 15 inch Popcorn Bowl for my husband who is a confirmed popcorn-junkie. He's been known to pop a bag and eat it out of one of my kitchen pots if all our bowls are dirty.
I twittered, too

the 17 inch bowl would be for ME! i'd use it for dough
Very nice! Sent the link to my Mom - she will love this shop!
I read that a wood bowl can be revived by using a non-abrasive scrub pad & lemon juice. I remember this huge nice cutting board that my grandma always used. I remember her using a lemon to clean it. I asked that the cutting board be willed to me - great memories.
I love that there's minimal waste because the majority of the wood is used in the bowl making!
Everything is beautiful, but the Spoon Rest Wooden Bowl - 17 inch - Dark Finish would make the perfect gift for my mother. Thanks!
I never knew that wood products would get darker over time.
I would give my brother the maple condiment cups as he is always cooking and would use these a lot! Thanks!
I have a lot of old wooden bowls that have gotten a little rancid over the years due to oily residue and build-up. I'm very glad to hear that these bowls can actually be revived by using a non-abrasive scrub pad, lemon juice, and pumice dust to remove the oil build up that has probably occurred over many years of use. I can't wait to try this out!

gorgeous bowls. Would love to win. Thanks for having the giveaway!!
Wooden bowls, if properly maintained, can darken with age! That's pretty cool.
I did know that vegetable oil isn't to be used to maintain wooden items: we have a butcher block that we oil with mineral oil!
ignoramoose (at) gmail (dot) com
I learned that it can take close to one hundred years for a hardwood tree to produce the grains that make each Holland Bowl Mill wooden bowl so beautiful. Thanks!

Chopping Bowl & Mezzaluna Knife Set would be fun for my MIL.
I didn't know oil was bad for wood products
Wow. I can't believe it can take a 100 year old tree to make a bowl! I LOVE wooden salad tongs and bowls. Looks like a great company!
I would have thought that there was more machine work involved/less person-power. Each bowl looks like it takes quite a lot of work. tinawittmer(at)yahoo(dot)com
I'd give my boyfriend the Cherry Bowl - 17 inch for mixing dough. tinawittmer(at)yahoo(dot)com
i thought it was super interesting that you can paint/stain the bowls. are they still food safe?
i'd give the tripod salad bowl stand to my aunt & uncle because there's not enough room at the family dinner table and they'd really use it!
My husband and I have that same passion for wooden objects that you seem to have. We can't walk into a store that we don't oooh and ahhh over the wooden salad bowls, fruit bowls, and cutting boards, even though we already own servicable models of each at home. I didn't realize that there was a safe way to remove vegetable oil build-up from wood before. Their cleaning tips for wood were very helpful.
michelle at northofthe49 dot com
Given a choice, I would definitely give MYSELF (okay, my husband if I had to, who would then give it to me) the Wooden Salad Bowl Set - 17 inch Bowl, eight 7 inch Bowls, Utensils - Oiled Finish. We have an inexpensive but servicable beech salad bowl and tongs that we use now, but I love the individual salad bowls and the type of wood used on this set.
michelle at northofthe49 dot com
I think it's especially refreshing that the bowls are still made the same way as they were over 150 years ago. So much stuff made today is made to break or is of lower quality than what our grandparents and great grandparents would have purchased.
What a wonderful giveaway! I do a LOT of cooking, so this would be the perfect prize for me!
I thought it was neat that the wood grains used in these bowls are from hardwood trees that are about 100 years old. What a cool thing to have in your kitchen, with so much history! They are beautiful. Thanks so much for the chance!
I think the Red Wood Bowl - 15 inch would be a great gift for my Grandma - heck, any cook in my family would love this!
